The original Hello Sailor font was drawn and released in January of 2014. Since then, the old school traditional tattoo letterforms have appeared on countless merch designs and flash paintings featured on websites like Mintees and Etsy.
I've often thought about how I could make Hello Sailor better. Over several revised releases, I added small caps in the lower case, and European character support. The real breakthough came when I saw the work of a specific designer, and I didn't quite recognize the font. It appeared as though they had converted Hello Sailor into a monoline for their work.
Once I understood what they had done, it took a while for me to learn how to convert hand-drawn letters into monolines, and then into outlines. A beginner technique for anyone familiar with Illustrator, I'm sure!
Next came the need for the time to do the work. Finally after much delay, a new Hello sailor monoline version was created. And then the edits came - first alternates on the K, N, and R. And then the removal of serifs. After much work, definitely a font we are truly proud of!
